The children’s section in Philippi East library received a much-needed facelift.

Last year the City of Cape Town’s library and information services announced that it plans to spend more than R40 million in its libraries.

Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodoen said the budget provides for library upgrades and maintenance with new (wireless internet) Wi-Fi connections, services and the acquisition of reading material to appeal to young and old. He said libraries are cornerstones of a healthy community and they give users an equal opportunity to find jobs, explore medical research, broaden their imagination and the chance to get lost in amazing stories. He added that the money spent on these facilities is an investment in the education and empowerment of communities.

The librarian in charge of Philippi East library Lawrence Mkentane said they received R55 000 to buy new furniture for the children’s section. “The furniture we had before was not attractive at all for the children but now they will be motivated to come to the library,” he said.

Mkentane said it is important for children to start coming to the library at an early age so they can get used to reading.

He said they also teach computer skills and help children with their school work.

He said they offer different programmes at the facility for both young and old and encourage parents to bring their children with them to the library.

Ward 35 councillor Mboniswa Chitha said it is important for libraries to get all the help they can because they assist schools in other areas of learning.

He also encouraged children to come at an early age to utilise libraries.
