Learners at Ludwe Ngamlana Primary School in Kuyasa, will start the new academic year on a clean slate following the opening of a new state-of-the-art science laboratory.

The laboratory valued at more than R600 000 was opened on Monday 2 December and is expected to boost the school’s academic performance into the new academic year and beyond.

It is one of 12 education development projects carried out by the South African Medical and Education (SAME) Foundation across the country to the value of R11.53 million. Several schools across the province have already benefited from the initiative. The foundation is a public benefit organisation focusing on education and healthcare, with the mission to create an environment where quality health care and education is available to everyone.

Trevor Pols, chief executive officer (CEO) of the foundation, said they hope to inspire the learners to take up careers in mathematics and science. He described investment in science and technology as vital for the future of young South African learners, particularly as the shift towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) intensifies.

“I hope that the learners appreciate what has been done for them and will use it wisely, and that it will also motivate the teachers,” said Pols.

School principal Noloyiso Mtimba-Dube said it is an honour and a dream that has become a reality.

She said they are excited that the science centre is being opened.

“We are grateful that the SAME Foundation has made it possible for our learners to be equipped with the skills and knowledge that will benefit the community of Kuyasa,” she said.

She assured everyone that they will use the laboratory wisely and it will be maintained and that the teachers will be trained so they can teach the learners to better scientists in the 21st century.
