Bukelwa Kula’s dreams of unveiling her mother’s tombstone have been shattered after the latter’s grave could not be located in the Gugulethu cemetery.

Kula, who lives in Khayelitsha feels so helpless and fears that the ceremony, planned for May, cannot continue.

“There is no trace of the grave, we don’t know what to do.”

The unveiling ceremony was planned for May, next month.

Even more horrifying, her mother’s name -Nonkosi Princes Kula- does not appear in the cemetery register for people buried at the graveyard.

Kula said her late mother was buried in January 2002, but now there are no signs of her tomb and that they were told her details cannot be found in the system for people who are buried there.

But her father’s grave was easily located when they went for a search.

Samuel Kula was also buried at the cemetery in 2004.

“It has been over three weeks now since we were trying to find her grave, but in vain.

“We are planning an unveiling ceremony for my parents, but now her grave cannot be traced. We have already bought their tombstones, which are due to be unveiled on 20 May. I feel very sad and I do not know what to do now.”

Kula speculated that the grave might have been used to inter somebody else.

“We suspect that they buried someone else on top of her and that grave number was given away,” Kula said.
