Nyanga police success against crime praised

Nyanga police are celebrating continued successes following the launch of the cluster crime combating team last year.

According to police, the team, implemented in April in line with the National Trio Plan focused on hijackings, house robberies and business robberies which continue to be a headache for the local police.

“Having been implemented in the past nine months the team’s efforts resulted into mammoth successes arresting suspects involved in hijacking cases, house robberies, business robberies, possession of unlicensed firearms and drugs and other various crimes.

Identified as hotspots of the trio crimes Gugulethu, Nyanga and Philippi East policing precincts were flooded with various focussed operations. Since its establishment 223 daily crime combating operations were conducted, 60 intelligence driven operations as well as 34 cluster driven joint operations which resulted to numerous key arrests,” said spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said that 21 suspects were arrested for house robberies, 21 for business robberies, 7 for hijackings, 21 for the possession of illegal/prohibited firearms and ammunition.

“There were 9 for possession of stolen property, 166 for drugs, 72 for possession of dangerous weapons, 46 for dealing in liquor and others for various other crimes.

We also arrested another 14 for illegal and prohibited firearms and 53 live rounds were confiscated with dagga, tik, mandrax, knives, liquor, cell phones, 8 stolen vehicles, car radios, toy gun, gas gun, television, fridge and various other items including cash were confiscated. These successes were mainly made in the three identified hotspots,” she said.

She added that the team continues to conduct focused operations in these areas in conjunction with other specialised units in the province and other Law Enforcement Agencies and Departments.

“The chairperson of the team, Brigadier Zingisa Manci congratulated the team led by Lt Col Marais of the Cluster for their team spirit, efforts, diligence and smart tactics in achieving tremendous successes in addressing TRIO crimes in Nyanga Cluster,” she added.
