2018-09-13 06:01

At least five of the eight police stations in City Vision’s distribution area are in the country’s top 10 crime hot-spots, with Nyanga once again leading the pack, the 2017/2018 crime statistics have revealed.

Philippi East, in Lower Crossroads is at number three, with Khayelitsha, Gugulethu and Mfuleni in number six, eight and 10 respectively.

With a total of 4 784 cases of contact crime reported, which includes murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (assault GBH), common assault, common robbery and sexual assault, Nyanga is second only to Johannesburg Central, in the Gauteng Province.

These shocking figures were released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Tuesday. The figures showed that in this province, murder cases increased by 1 320 from 19 016 during the previous crime statistics figures, with attempted murders increasing by 28 from 18 205.

Nyanga accounts for 308 murders committed in the province, an increase of 27 from the previous year. The other four stations account for 736 murders.

The combined three Khayelitsha police stations, Lingelethu, Harare and Khayelitsha accounted for 375 murders. Philippi East recorded a shocking figure of 205 murders, a total of 55 more murders from the previous year.

Gugulethu registered 182 murder cases, an increase of 46, Mfuleni 157 an increase of 32. Langa recorded the lowest murder cases of 52, a drop of 5 from the previous crime statistics.

Cele labelled the latest crime stats as “sad” and “depressing”, adding that a lot more needed to be done.

With 57 people killed in the country each day, Cele said the current depicted a picture of a nation in a warzone.
