A young Gugulethu promoter has decided to make a difference in the lives of young girl children by making their cycles as bearable as possible.

Olwam Mbema, from Station Park in Gugulethu, has donated a trancje of sanitary pads to young girls at Litha Primary School.

She said this was her way of giving back to the community since she launched her events business two years ago.

“In 2015 I hosted my first event for local rap performers and Djs. Since then the business has grown in leaps and bounds. I then decided that this year I wanted to go big. So I hosted an event on my birthday which was on the 30th of July to be able to make this donation possible,” she said.

She said that she understood the plight of young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds and their struggle for sanitary pads.

“Many of them use unhygienic alternatives to sanitary pads which puts them at a health risk, which may cause infections. I just want to give hope to them and make sure that they don’t miss school just because they don’t have pads,” she said. She said that she is happy to see young girls not being ashamed and embarrassed and to see them with their dignity intact,” she added.
