Runners and fans were treated to a feast of Olympic running treats when Olympian Elroy Gelant ran his 10km University of the Western Cape Fast and Flat race in 28m39s - setting a new record for the popular road race.

More than 2000 people from across the province enjoyed a 10km Road Race, 10km walk and 5km fun run on Saturday 3 June 2017.

This year, the University of the Western Cape dedicated the race to founder Roger Adams, a beloved former athletics coach who passed away last year.

Gelant is a long distance runner and 4 000 metre champion from Potchefstroom managed to run at an average of approximately 22 km/h to finish the race in record time and claim the first place in the 10km road race.

Gelant has participated in various races and represented South Africa internationally: he finished 12th at the 2012 Indoor and 2013 Outdoor World Championships, and his most recent prominent achievement was in 2016 when he came 2nd in the 5 000 metres at the African Championships in Durban.
