Cape Town residents were over the moon when a Khayelitsha woman gave birth to quadruplets in July last year.

A year later, Bungcwele, Buchule, Bubele and Bunono Mafenuka looked to have been healthy at their first birthday party held at the KFM94.5 studios in Green Point, where everyone was looking forward to celebrating more of the quads’ birthday celebrations.

Sadly, on Thursday morning (1 August), one of the quads, Bubele passed away after allegedly suffering from diarrhoea.

According to reports, neighbour Stella Booi received a call from the babies’ mother, Inganathi, and grandmother to inform her that he (Bubele) was ill and had to go to hospital urgently.

When she got to the Mafuneka residence, the little boy was said to have been having difficulty breathing.

Another neighbour took the boy to a nearby clinic where he was declared dead on arrival.

In a telephone conversation with Eyewitness News, Booi said the Inganathi was devastated.

A clip of the conversation was played, and Booi was heard saying the first-time mother was not taking the news well.

“She is so weak, she cannot accept [the death]. She is crying, she is crying. She cannot accept,” said the emotional Booi.

At the birthday celebration, Inganathi said that Bubele was showing more progress than his siblings and had even started walking before them at the time.
