Open letter, poem to Mbalula

2017-06-01 06:00

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula’s last week’s visit to Nyanga left me more upset than was the case before.

For me, it was just another public relations exercise that left the people of Nyanga with more promises and temporary solutions to last a couple of weeks.

Then everything will go back to the usual until another unfortunate incident occurs.

Instead of the minister coming back with solutions to the list of serious issues we handed the previous ministers, Nathi Mthethwa and Nathi Nhleko, another list had to be drawn up again.

Why we as the people from the second oldest township in the Western Cape disregarded by both the national and provincial governments.

For more than a decade, we have been regarded the murder capital of the country and a heaven for ruthless criminals but nobody in government seems to care.

Minister Mbalula, we require resources, not any more rhetoric, as our people are killed like animals and we live in fear.

Below is a poem I wrote while Nathi Mthethwa was a minister and still nothing has changed:

The Murder capital, Divine space for criminals, A place where Jesus sleeps, And Satan recruits, Churches are lifeless

While taverns flourish, Drug lords are praised,

Young girls get raped And Fatherless babies are raised. Thugs hip and hop to siren sounds, While police chase shadows at night, Gastric juices breakdown positive thoughts And poverty steals dreams, Brain self-destruct, Gory thoughts construct, And Gun powder rapidly spreads, While the light at the end of the tunnel slowly disappears, Government croons a still tune, In numbers learners dropout of school backyard dwellers homes exist in their dreams

because urbanization like acid rain

when it lands crops die

so are our dreams
