Government’s efforts to combat crime under Operation Fiela have thus far proven fruitful.

In a recent series of operations under this campaign, which is aimed at targeting illegal liquor traders and drug dealers, the Nyanga police cluster arrested three people.

Spokesperson Captain Nomboxolo Sitshitshi says this joint operation between police, Law Enforcement and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) yielded positive results.

“The operation focused mostly on illegal liquor outlets, secondhand drug dealers (drug runners), stop-and-searches and vehicle control points,” she says.

A total of 153 litres of alcohol and 25 kilograms of dagga were confiscated during this operation.

“A total R2500 fine was also issued to an unlicensed scrapyard.”

Two suspects, aged 39 and 31, appeared in the Philippi Magistrate’s Court yesterday, 17 May, on charges of dealing in dagga.

Another 27-year-old suspect is due to appear today on charges of dealing in illegal alcohol.
