A Gugulethu family has been left reeling after their youngest member fell victim to reckless driving.

Othandwayo Sonandi, 4, was hit by a speeding Citi Golf in NY99 while he was playing outside with other children.

According to his grandmother Nomvula Gomba, 72, the boy had been attending the birthday party of a friend with his mother and older brother.

“The car was in full speed and knocked him down as he was crossing the street. After hitting him the car tried to speed off, but Othandwayo was trapped under the car and he was dragged until residents stopped the car,” said Gomba.

He was injured in the leg and the head was rushed to hospital where he was announced dead on arrival.

“His nine year old brother witnessed the event as it unfolded. We are deeply hurt as a family. What hurt the most is that the police didn’t handle the situation accordingly.

“They did not arrest the driver and did not even test him for alcohol,” she said.

The man was later arrested after the child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

She said that the whole incident was hard on the family, in particular the parents.

“We are appealing to people to stop driving recklessly on the road and drinking and driving. We would also like to thank the community of Ny99 for assisting as soon as possible,” said Gomba.

Othandwayo was laid to rest last Friday after a funeral service from his home in Section Four of Gugulethu.

Police said a case of reckless driving and homicide is being investigated.
