Words cannot describe what I witnessed on Saturday at NY 111 on invitation of Mr Banana Sodinga.

It was young “Tysons” exchanging blows with each other. I did not know that, boxing was supported and liked by such young giants in our communities.

These boys all possess the fundamental foundations of a boxer, that is, defence and standing, and believe you me, all deliver mean punches at such young age. These pugilists, if I may, are determined and motivated even though they are compromised in respect of resources so as to develop into fully fledged boxers. By this, I mean, they had limited boxing regalia and to such an extent, they had to borrow and share boxing gloves so as for the games to begin and continue.

For logistical reasons, these games did not commence on time, but these young pugilists persevered and waited ensuring that they had their day in the ring.

This is pure determination and surprisingly enough, most children their age, are normally glued to their play stations and are normally champions in these TV games. I am impressed and can definitely not wait for an opportunity to witness these games again.

I was however advised, that a similar tournament will be in the offing on 24 September at the Sports Complex.

I would like to encourage the organisers to soldier on as there is a great propensity that these games will be a success. I am convinced, there is so much raw talent that will be unearthed in these games. I also applaud the trainers, with such limited resources they have at their disposal, for the splendid work they have done and achieved with their young boxers. Please keep up the good work and I am sure better opportunities will present themselves .
