Girls from Sophumela High School in Samora Machel will not have to worry about buying sanitary towels during the December school holidays.

Samora Machel Youth Development Forum partnered with one of the big retail companies and made it possible for the young girls to enjoy their holidays by making this donation.

They donated a total of 1 500 sanitary pads and 1 500 tampons to the girls.

A Grade 12 learner Emihle Ngazulwana thanked the forum for giving them sanitary pads. She said she hoped it will not be the last time they do so.

“Some of us are coming from poor families and we can’t afford these things, so I’m glad the forum has helped us. We really appreciate it,” said Ngazulwana.

The forum’s deputy chair Nokubonga Mepeni said they saw there was a problem at the school because most girls would not go to school when on their period.

“The reason girls do not go to school when on their period is because some can’t afford to buy sanitary towels while others get laughed at because they either use toilet paper or some cloth,” she said.

Mepeni said the cloths and toilet paper they use are also a health risk to the girls because they can cause infections.

She said by doing this they are trying to give young girls back their dignity and that they hope to do more in the future.
