LETTER: Parly should not be ‘pophuis’

2016-02-11 06:00

Last year, South Africans and the rest of the world saw our MPs acting in a manner unbecoming of the office they hold.

My view about what should happen inside parliament is that the arguments should be about issues that help to develop the country. That is what’s important, instead of certain parties degrading others or their members to prove they’re better than the other. That should be left for election campaigns. The problem with the MPs carrying on the way they are is that we will lose our credibility as a sustainable and developing country. The MPs’ behaviour shows people that we cannot agree on anything but are always throwing insults at each other, making us lose hope that things will ever come right.

My plea is that they should remember their parties come second, because the country and its concerns should be their top priority. South Africa is a beautiful country and is a development model for other African countries. This year parliament should display unity so citizens can believe in our growth and unite through our problems. We are all people who live in different houses, communities, cities and provinces, but we are one big family that should look after and support one another. And this should be evident inside parliament.
