A 66-year-old man died in Michael Street, Nomzamo on Tuesday evening (11 September).

Onlookers told City Vision the man was walking when he suddenly collapsed. Some say he may have suffered a stroke.

“He did not cough or show any signs of being in pain,” said Lonwabo Sitshoni, who was on his way home from work when the incident occurred.

“You could see he had no control over his body when he fell, and when he hit the ground he did not move,” Sitshono recalled. “It was scary watching it happen; the women around us started to scream.”

The man was identified as a Zimbabwean national who lived in Nomzamo.

His family was alerted to his death and asked not to be interviewed, as they wanted the cause of death to be confirmed.

Adebeyi Okafor, who owns a barbershop near Michael Street, was so saddend by the incident that he closed his business for the night. “It happened right in front me, while I was sweeping,” he recalled.

“I said ‘God, please don’t take him now,’ but he was already gone.

“It’s very sad for someone to die in the road like this man. I was really saddened by this and could not keep my business operating at such a time.”

Police spokesperson Constable Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident, and said a post-mortem will determine the cause of death.

“An inquest docket was opened at Lwandle Police Station on Tuesday 11 September,” he said. “This is after the body of a 66-year-old man was found in Michael Street in Nomzamo on the same day.”
