False Bay Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College hosted its annual Awards and Diploma Ceremony to acknowledge students who have excelled in their respective programmes and celebrate those who have graduated.

This year’s the event was hosted at the main Hall of the Khayelitsha Campus.

A total of 69 trophy awards were presented to students who achieved the highest average for the programme across all campuses of False Bay College.

Through the generous sponsorship of Cape Book and College Suppliers, prizes in the form of tablets were given to exiting level students.

Over 100 students achieved their National Diploma in a variety of fields, demonstrating an 83% increase from the previous year, making this year’s college graduate numbers the best to date.

The increase is due to a focused intervention by the college to assist students in the submission of logbooks to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) for verification.

The majority of graduates came from the fields of Educare N4-N6 and Financial Management N4-N6.

Acting Principal Karin Hendricks proudly stated in her opening address that the college has exceeded the academic targets set for 2017.

“Our Distance Learning Campus experienced a 45% increase in enrolments and the CPUT ICT Level 5 partnership programme achieved a certification rate of 77%.

“Furthermore, on 14 September, the college launched the Blikkiesdorp Project, a skills training programme for 100 beneficiaries from the informal settlement of the same name.

“This programme is a partnership with Airports Company SA (ACSA) and the City of Cape Town.

False Bay TVET College was also awarded Centres of Specialisation in Rigging and Mechanical Fitting by the DHET.

“Just in time, as the college has finalised negotiations around the shared leasing of buildings on the Swartklip Site, which will become a new College Campus servicing the business and communities in the surrounds,” she said.

Each year, a special CEO award is bestowed upon one top performing student, selected by the college CEO.

This year, it was awarded to Pioneira Pelston, a student who not only demonstrated outstanding academic achievements, but has also shown tremendous social responsibility.

Pioneira started her journey with the college in 2014, registering for the NC(V) Finance, Economics and Accounting, fresh out of Grade 9.

Of the 21 subjects she has completed over a three year period, 20 were distinctions.

She then proceeded to register for Financial Management in 2017 and continues to excel in all her subjects.

Pioneira also volunteered at Surfers Outrage in Muizenberg, an organisations that helps assist underprivileged children and is well known for assisting fellow classmates on an academic and social level.

Special guest’s speaker Andiswa Makha, Trianing Manager, MOT SA, shared with the audience her personal journey to success. With the relatable anecdotes, the audience nodded in agreement.

This event brings together parents, academic staff, sponsors and students.
