The construction of 289 new houses in ward 98 in Harare is expected to start soon after contractors completed the installation of the underground infrastructure.

The houses will be built opposite Harare police station.

Ward councillor Anele Gabuza said building is expected to start next month. He said the majority of the houses will be bond houses, with only 25 Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses.

“The beneficiaries are going to be people earning between R3 500 to R22 000 and members of military veterans will also be included,” he said. He emphasised that there is a set criteria for beneficiaries and the veterans will also have to meet all the requirements.

Gabuza added that individuals who are blacklisted or are listed on the credit bureau will not be accepted. He stated that construction has already begun at two other sites in the ward. “There is a construction site near Sangweni High School and the other site is near Isiphiwe Primary School. Both sites are under construction and the City will build 490 RDP houses on each site,” he said, adding that beneficiaries will be backyarders from his ward.

Gabuza said the idea is to turn Khayelitsha into an economic hub.

Khayelitsha Development Forum chairperson Ndithini Tyhido said they support any kind of development in the area, particularly if it will empower the community. “It is not only about building houses but also about creating wealth. The more we develop our area the more the value of the area rises,” said Tyhido adding that it also creates job opportunities for the community.
