In a celebration of words and poetry, the Naked Word Festival takes place from Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24 June.

Mbongeni Nomkonwana, managing director of Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement which organises the festival, says they are excited for this year’s instalment.

“Last year, poets from all over the country came together to celebrate poetry and spoken word and we expect this year’s festival to be even bigger.”

The festival kicks off at Café Ganesh in Observatory on Wednesday 20 June for Grounding Sessions featuring nationally renowned poets Anele Kose, Sabelo Soko, Wazi Kunene, Mthunzikazi Mbungwana, Thando Fuze, Torsten Clear Rybka and MoAfrika ‘a Mokgathi.

On Thursday 21 June, Cape Town’s longest running poetry event, Off The Wall Poetry Sessions, will take place at the festival, featuring Louise Westerhout. The official opening takes place on Friday 22 June at Theatre Arts Admin Collective.

Lingua Franca Spoken Word Movement’s artistic director, Lwanda Sindaphi, will direct various featured artists from the festival in a special performance to introduce this year’s festival theme, “In my blood, I contain multitudes”.

Saturday 23 June will be jam-packed with the poetry of the youth: S’gela youth poetry slam, the official Naked Word Festival poetry competition, Naked Slam and a showcase from the Cypher, while the night will close with the Naked Word Poetry Session featuring Lingua Franca Band with Mthunzikazi Mbongwana, Afeefa Omar, Lee Mokobe, Anele Kose, Tauriq Jenkins, Torsten Clear Rybka and MoAfrika ‘a Mokgathi.

The last day of the festival, Sunday 24 June, will begin with a panel discussion on the topic, “Far Away from Home”, highlighting the lived experiences of those who have left home in search of new lives in new lands.

The festival will be closed by the popular poetry showcase, Rioters in Session, curated by artist and poet Khanyisile Mbongwa and featuring Siphokazi Jonas, Ashley Makue, Allison-Claire Hoskins and Jolyn Phillips.

V Tickets for the festival are available at WebTickets and at the door.
