Police appeal for calm after murder

2019-04-18 06:00

There have been mixed emotions in Langa following the vigilante killing of a 31-year-old man last week Saturday.

Police are appealing for calm and are urging the community not to take the law into their own hands.

However, one community leader has described the killing as a sign of rage from the residents.

The deceased, Yongana Mali was allegedly assaulted by residents in Zone 8 after he robbed a community member of a cellphone.

Langa police spokesperson Captain Nondumiso Paul described the residents’ actions as “unlawful”.

She said police were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon. She said the man had been beaten up and when police arrived “he was lying in a pool of blood”.

Paul said a case of murder has been opened. She urged anyone with information to come forward.

One of the community leaders, Vusi Mandindi, said the incident showed that residents were tired of criminal activities in their area.

“It’s been a while. Gangs are terrorising our communities. People are scared of walking out on the streets carrying their cellphones because they get robbed,” he said.

Mandindi said the deceased is believed to be a member of the gang that tormented the community and is suspected of being behind an attempted hijacking of a Uber driver where two people were killed (“Help them to bury daughter” City Vision March 28).

Mandindi said Langa residents are on a mission to reclaim their streets from the criminals.

Captain Paul admitted that the deceased was involved in several criminal activities but said that was no excuse for residents to resort to mob justice.
