Elderly citizens, all members of Ilitha Lamaxhego Senior Citizen’s Club from Crossroads, were thrilled when officers from the Nyanga Police Station donated clothes and blankets to keep them warm during the cold winter months.

The handover was on Thursday last week at the old Crossroads library, opposite Crossroads Clinic.

Club member Stanford Makatesi (75) said they are grateful to the police for thinking about them.

“As elderly people, we are easily forgotten by our communities so being recognised makes us feel important,” he said.

Makatesi said as old people they go through a lot within their families and the community. He said besides the abuse they also raise their grandchildren because their parents dump them.

Makatesi said their monthly pension money is not enough to sustain them and their families, meaning they can never buy themselves other essential items such as clothes. “Even though our grandchildren get grant each month their parents misuse that money instead of helping us raise their children,” he said.

Nyanga police spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi thanked the Gift of the Givers for giving the clothes.

She said the donation came after the organisation realised the hardship that was endured by some people in the greater Nyanga area.

Sitshitshi said the club is not the only people that benefited from the donation.

She said shelters that accommodate women and children who are victims of crime and orphanage homes also scored.
