According to a statement by Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha, the officers had just finished serving a protection order at one address when they were approached with a similar complaint within the vicinity.

He says on their way to assist they were suddenly allegedly shot at in Acacia Street after 20:00, by about three armed man, who subsequently robbed them of their firearms before they fled the scene.

Ramovha says the trio killed one police officer while wounding her colleague.

On Wednesday morning, the Hawks swooped in on the 19-year-old man and arrested him for murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. He is expected to appear in the Athlone’s Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
