Project Playground hosted a roadshow and a dialogue session in Langa on Saturday; however the poor turnout did little to dampen spirits.

The Non Government Organisation announced that little will stand in its way to fight gang violence in the area.

Xoliswa Mqikela told City Vision that they had invited young people, adults, parents and local leaders but very few people showed up except for young kids.

“This is an initiative we started in response to recent incidents where young people were killed in gangster fights.

We are saying enough is enough, so we wanted to gather everyone to have a dialogue and find a solution,” she said.

Last week, a 16 and a 17 year old were stabbed to death in Langa, which incident led to the arrest of five young men between the ages of 13 to 21 years.

Saturday’s event began with a march around Langa, with placards that read ‘enough is enough’ and ‘gangsterism must fall’.

“We began from Bhunga Park in Washington Street and we passed the taxi rank and the train station and ended up with the dialogue at Marigana,” she explained.

Mqikela said that they will continue with these public demonstrations till the community looks up.

“We will continue with such activations by hosting an event every month. We want the solutions to come from the community.

Youth gangs are not a new phenomenon but seem to be on the rise with the recent incidents of murder and stabbings.”
