Gugulethu tavern owner Popza Sawula has been announced the winner in the Bull’s Eye competition run by Ekasi Cellar Door, an alcohol distributor based in Philippion.

Popza, as he is popularily known, walked away with a trailer and R2000 in stock.

According to Thando Mapona, the sponsor of the competition, the purpose was to drive the sales of their benchmark brand, Dragon’s Back Wines.

“We ran the competition over three months, where traders were encouraged to buy and resell the brand, including our reds, whites and champagne,” he said.

So he was the one who kept on buying more every month. We are very happy that he won,” said Mapoma.

Dragon’s Back Wine is one of the many alcohol brands that the wholesaler, based on the corners of Lansdowne and Stock Road, sells.

“We are trying to not just introduce wine consumption but the culture of wine tasting and visiting wine farms. So we stage tasting events in the townships to get people used to tasting wines.

We believe that it is a healthier option than beer and whiskey, which are currently popular in our neighbourhoods,” said Mapoma.

Sawula said the he was very happy for the win and the prize.

“I’m very excited because I do a lot of promotions to get people to buy these wines and they are doing just that.

The trailer is going to help me when purchasing stock and it will also be a testament that to get something you have to work for it,” he said.

He said that since he introduced the wine to his patrons, the appreciation is on the upward spriral.

Mapoma said they will continue with these activations in a bid to see more locals sip the bluish red.
