Hundreds of sports fans flocked to Lwandle Sports Complex from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 January to show their support for the sixth annual LNG Music and Sports Festival.

The packed grandstand witnessed football of a high calibre, and fans were also treated to pumping music entertainment throughout the three-day festival.

In the soccer tournament, teams vied to claim the titles of three categories: under-18, seniors and legends. The young guns category was eventually won by Helderberg Rovers, after they beat their Strand Hotspurs counterparts 1-0 in the final clash.

The very entertaining legends category was won by Strand Legends, after they convincingly beat Indwe, a team made up of former footballers from the Eastern Cape, by three goals to zero.

It took extra time for RDP to claim the spoils in the senior division. They locked horns with Brazz LNG FC in the final, a team comprising mostly Two For Joy FC players.

Mzukisi Madondile, chairperson of the Helderberg Football Association, could not stop singing the praises of the festival organisers. “This festival grows every year,” he related. “I like that they have added an under-18 tournament as well, because it gives the young boys a chance to showcase their talents and test their readiness for the upcoming season. I was also very happy to see the community show their support with good attendance figures.”

Mzukisi Mxhonywa, who was voted overall player of the tournament, said it was a good experience. He said: “People came out to support, and we enjoyed ourselves. I am happy with the Player of the Tournament Award, as I always try to do my best whenever I put the jersey on. I take my chances, because everyone is hungry for game time.”

An emotional Lunga Smile, organiser and founder of the festival, shed tears in awe of the support from the entire community. “The stands were filled to capacity every day,” he said. “This shows the community has owned this festival and was proud to be a part of it.

“The only thing missing now is the monetary sponsor, which I believe we will get next year. I thank not only the community of Strand, but other communities who came here to support.”

Festivalgoer Malusi Ngcingwane said: “I have never seen a big festival like this [hosted in our community before]. We should honour and thank Lunga for having the vision to start this initiative and for continuously striving to improve it. For the last six years he has managed to deliver the biggest and best festival of this community. I really enjoyed watching the football on display.”
