Lagunya is abundantly blessed with musicians of all genres!

To help you understand where I come from; three weeks ago I attended a funeral in Gugulethu and after the service a jazz band, consisting of artists between the ages of 12 and 30 years, entertained us in tribute to the gentleman. I was surprised by the level and depth of their knowledge of jazz music.

The maturity, the manner in which they expressed themselves, was awe-inspiring. Their emotional being and connectedness with the audience, blew us apart. Yet they remain unsung!

The icing on the cake was when I was driving home on Friday evening, listening to SAFM in the evening.

Guess who was being interviewed! Lagunya’s own Ms Zami Mdingi, lead singer of all female group, CODA.

Mdingi hails from Gugulethu, and I bet my last cent that not all of us know who she is.

And those of us who know who she is, are oblivious of what she does and her standing in the music industry.

It is unfair that she can be on national radio and yet locally, she remains obscure.

Ignorance of who she is, is giving me sleepless nights. We do not support our local talent and yet are prepared to support acts from afar.

How do we expect our local talent to grow, if we do not support them.

Listen to her music and be soothed by her scintillating voice.

I sensed that she had it tough in the local music industry, but she and others are still soldiering on.

Her tenacity and steadfastness is slowly paying off, as she has shared the stage with the Bra Hughs of this world.

Recently, she featured at the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert.

Zami, hang in there. Through your resoluteness, a lot of raw diamonds will take mettle of your journey and will only learn from your experience. It is also important that you rise and make us proud.
