On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa paid a visit to the grieving family of the late Lizeka ‘Mazo’ Mngxali- Zide in Thembani.

Mgxali-Zide was shot dead in a cold blooded murder last week on Tuesday, an incident that has sent shockwaves throughout the community of Khayelitsha.

According to eye-witness accounts, Mngxali-Zide was shot eight times by an unidentified balaclava wearing man as she was leaving a spaza shop in the area.

Ramaphosa got to hear of the gruesome murder because Mngxali-Zide’s daughter, Nonkosi, works at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

During the visit Ramaphosa passed them his condolences and urged the police to investigate the matter thoroughly.

A family member said Mazo had gone to the shop to buy data when the incident occurred.

“We are still shocked at how she died. Her death has brought trauma to the family,” she said.

A friend who was with her during the incident said she hasn’t recovered from the ordeal.

Police have revealed that a suspect has been arrested and is under custody. The family expressed satisfaction with President Ramaphosa’s visit, saying it showed that he was “a leader in touch with his people”.

“This means a lot to us ... Despite his busy schedule, he was able to visit us,” said one family member.Mngxali will laid to rest on Saturday.
