Three schools, two from Philippi (Zanemfundo and Siyazakha primary schools) and one from Gugulethu (Sonwabo primary took the top three positions in the LITNUM awards on Tuesday 26 February. The awards acknowledge and celebrate top achievers in the 2018 systemic tests. The three schools were recognised for Excellence in Academic performance in Mathematics: Grades 3 and 6.

Sonwabo Primary School principal Bongani Dlwathi said: “I am happy with what the school has achieved, because when you work hard and get awarded you get to pat yourself on the back.”

Dlwathi said they are committed in what they are doing and give thanks to other organisations that helped the school to achieve this.

Siyazakha primary principal Nomsa Shosha said they are proud to have been recognised for the effort they put in to educate learners.

“We work together as teachers to make sure that the foundation is laid for the next grades and they devote extra hours to education,” Shosha said.

Western Cape minister of Education Debbie Schäfer said, she is proud of the achievements of the three schools and all the other schools that saw improvements in the results last year.

“Congratulations to the principals and their teams, their determination and hard work paid off and the real winners are the learners at the school. Our main priority is to close the gap between the less advantaged and more advantaged schools so they can provide quality education for every child, she said.”
