Phumza Maweni, a South African Netball national team player from Khayelitsha, is the latest in a series of people to bail out the SST fire victims.

The Proteas goalkeeper recently donated school uniform to a group of Chuma Primary School learners who lost everything during the fire.

Maweni bought school shirts, trousers and skirts for 63 learners.

Maweni said when the fire broke out she was around, and had decided to contribute something.

“I sat down with my family and we decided that I should donate school uniforms because education is very important,” she said.

She said she wanted to encourage children from her area to take education serious to improve their future prospects.

Maweni praised the community for supporting her when she started her netball career.

“I got a lot of encouragement from this community.

“I would even knock at people’s doors asking for money so that I can go and play for the province,” she said.

Vuyane Ngqaqa, a father of a Grade R learner Indivile (6), said he is happy with the donation.

Ngqaqa said most of the learners did not know where to get uniforms following the fire.

Another parent, Sikelelwa Pakade, mother of another Grade R learner Chumisa (6), praised Maweni.

Pakade said she now does not have to worry about her child’s school uniform anymore.

“I feel like a load has been lifted off my shoulders. I would not sleep easy at night because I was always worried about her uniform,” she said.
