Provide us with career options

The rate of unemployment is a major concern in my community, but my biggest concern though is why there isn’t a careers section in this newspaper?

I have personally held workshops at the Langa Library in which I empowered my community with the skills that I have learnt over the years, not only through experience but through thorough research from credible websites and interviews with different recruitment agencies and Human Resources departments.

I imparted soft skills, interview skills, CV formats, the basics of sending e-mails, how to write a professional online profile, just to name a few.

This has led me to get an opportunity to head up a programme called Skills to Succeed which is sponsored by Accenture, one of the biggest IT companies in the world.

And I have had the opportunity of going through many CVs over the years, and it is becoming clearer to me that my people are in need of these skills. Many people are unemployed, thinking they’ve been bewitched, whilst the real reason of their misfortune is because they’ve missed something so simple, yet so important, that it could determine whether or not they get called for that interview.

Times are changing, technology is evolving so rapidly that old recruitment processes are soon becoming obsolete. And the sad part is that many people in my community don’t know this. But how would they know if they don’t have the resources?

A careers page where people would be equipped with these skills, and where jobs from credible companies can be posted as well.

Most of the ones posted in the Classified section are not credible.
