Raising funds for Kung Fu kids

2018-02-15 06:01

Eighteen children from the Western Cape who are training under Cape Town-born M.J. Li, a three-time gold medallist and Legends of Kung Fu champion, will depart for Hong Kong on 13 March 2018.

They will be competing in the 16th Annual International Hong Kong Kung Fu Tournament taking place in Ma On Shan, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Li has adopted eight schools across the province where he is teaching Kung Fu.

The members of the squad come from Bonteheuwel, Paarl, Wellington, Mitchell’s Plain, Langa, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Wynberg and Lansdowne.

This will be the first South African youth squad to attend this tournament.

Three of the 18 children urgently need funding to be able to take part in this opportunity of a lifetime.

Each athlete has to raise about R30 000 to cover their flights, food and accommodation

The three athletes requiring assistance are Toufeeq Wyngaard,12, from Bonteheuwel, Clive Snawo Yola,16, from Gugulethu and Angelo Njobe,15, from Khayelitsha.

They, along with the other students, have been training with the youth squad for a year and love what they do.

However, due to their socioeconomic circumstances, funding is quite difficult to generate.

“The children are excited and would love to go on this experience along with the other students,” says Li.

To raise funds for these three athletes a comedy show will be held, featuring the likes of Dalin Oliver and many others, on 24 February at Wynberg High School.

Li encourages everyone to come and support this event and help make these three children’s dreams a reality.
