Renew your Sassa card soonest

Time is running out for beneficiaries to swap the old white card for the new gold Sassa card, the South African Post Office (Sapo) says in a statement.

So, are you or someone you know a Sassa beneficiary?.

The old card will be fully phased out by the end of September and beneficiaries are urged to swap over to the new gold card before 20 September to ensure their grants are paid into the new card, the Sapo statement reads.

“There are more than 14 000 beneficiaries in the Western Cape who still use the old card.

The grant payment computer closes on the 20th of September. If your grant is paid into the old Sassa card after 20 September, your money will have to be transferred from CPS to Postbank. That will delay payment of your grant.”

According to the statement, some post offices in the Western Cape can also do card swaps and Sassa beneficiaries are invited to go and swap their cards during business hours.

Post offices in the northern suburbs are: Bellville, Brackenfell, CapeGate, Eerste River, Durbanville, Edgemead, Elsies River, Goodwood, Kasselsvlei, Kraaifontein, Parow, Milnerton’s Chempet Post Office and Tyger Valley.

“It takes on average only four minutes to complete the swap. All you need is your old Sassa card and an ID book or card,” says Sapo’s COO, Lindiwe Kwele.

The new card is an improvement on the old card and it does not allow deductions for things such as airtime, loans or prepaid electricity.

“The only deduction permitted is for funeral policies, up to no more than 10% of the grant value. The benefits of the new card include: Three free cash withdrawals at points of sale; one free withdrawal at the post office per month; free swipes at points of sale, and one free ATM balance inquiry per month.

It is accepted by all ATMs displaying the Visa sign.”

Those who prefer their grant to be paid into their bank account can fill in an Annexure C form available at
