Report lack of service delivery

2016-04-07 06:00

Reporting service delivery issues to the City of Cape Town is easy – if you have airtime to call or can use the City’s website. Project Lungisa (”fix it” in isiXhosa) helps Khayelitsha residents access the City’s reporting tools. Residents of Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Mfuleni and Phillipi who have problems with public sanitation, water, electricity, or roads send an SMS or WhatsApp message to Lungisa. Lungisa staff then channel those reports to officials from the City of Cape Town and follow up to ensure the problems are fixed.

Lungisa gives residents a faster, cheaper way to report problems and encourages more timely resolutions. One anonymous Mfulani reporter said, “We have been living in the dark for over two years as our street lights stopped working and we get robbed of our belongings at night because criminals easily target people in the dark areas at night.” She reported the issue to Lungisa via SMS and the street lights were fixed in less than a month.

“LUNGISA PROJECT, ENKOSI, ENKOSI, ENKOSI”, read another SMS received last week from Mfulani. “When I came back from work, I saw the City of Cape Town building speed humps on Government Road.” In about 3 weeks, Lungisa helped create a safer environment for people accessing the street and children playing nearby.

Project Coordinator, Abongile Nyumbeka, believes the work of Lungisa goes beyond improving service delivery. “The information that we get is information that people need to have to hold government accountable. In doing so, we aim to empower people living in these communities to have their voices heard. Giving citizens that agency and sense of belief that there is something they can do that will actually lead to change is really important.”

To send a report, include a brief description of the complaint with details and location, and submit via:

•SMS: Text the word “Lungisa” to 44772

•What’s App: 072-312-9270

•Facebook: or search Project Lungisa to send a message
