Some residents in Barcelona informal settlement, in Gugulethu, are up in arms and are complaining about the amount of rubbish that is piling up in front of their homes.

Some of the dirt is scattered outside shipping containers, that are meant for dumping next to the the NY 5 cemetery.

When City Vision visited the area goats were feeding off the waste.

And according to some residents the mess is becoming unbearable.

Resident Nomonde Mda said the rubbish that is not good for her family’s health.

“Children will always be children even if you tell them not to play in the rubbish they do and they get sick afterwards,” she said.

Mda said the containers are locked, something that forces people to just dump their waste anywhere.

She said the residents are not helping the situation because they are the ones that dump their refuse next to the containers, but they do not have a choice because they do not have dust bins.

Mda said some people even dump their dead dogs, creating a very bad stench on hot days.

Ward 40 councillor Bongani Ngcombolo said the rubbish is supposed to be collected by the City of Cape Town’s solid waste management department.

However, he said a group of residents from the area is preventing the City from doing the work. He said trucks that come to collect the rubbish are stoned preventing the council from deploying workers into the area.

Ngcombolo said the City uses its own database when there are jobs available for the community but the same community is not happy with the City’s system of rolling out jobs.
