Residents in Town Two, Khayelitsha, tried in vain to persuade police to allow them to view a body of a man found lying in a pathway towards the Khayelitsha Mall.

The man, suspected to have been shot, was found lying face down on Friday 10 March on an open field between Town Two and the mall, adjacent to Graceland.

The bushy field is used by the majority of Town Two residents to visit the mall for their daily shopping. The field has been a subject of many discussions with plans to build houses and numerous attempts to illegally invade it.

Following the discovery irate residents demanded to see the corpse. “That body will now rot in that bag, as this is a busy time in the country because of the coronavirus. We wanted to see if we could identify the man and alert people in our community,” one woman said.

While the pathology personnel was removing the body to load it into the mortuary vehicle, residents started walking closer towards the scene.

Another woman could be heard shouting: “Why are they refusing us to see if we don’t know this man? We have brothers who roam the streets looking for alcohol at night and we want to be sure if it’s not someone we know.”

A man who wanted to remain anonymous said he noted a large gathering at the scene. “When I saw so many people I was curious to see what exactly had happened. Unfortunately, the police did not allow anyone close to the deceased,” said the man.

He described the open field as a dangerous territory for everyone crossing it to the mall. “People are robbed there frequently. I don’t know what happened to the deceased, but this field is very dangerous,” he said.

Col Andre Traut said the circumstances regarding the death of the unknown man believed to be in his 30s were being investigated.

He confirmed that a body was discovered on an open field at around 09:00. “No one has been arrested yet,” said Traut.
