LETTER: Respecting opposition is part of democracy

2016-02-18 06:00

Our history has been a bitter one dominated by colonialism, racism and apartheid.

However, we have done well in making sure that South Africa is liberated. I doubt if the current ANC leadership knows where it is taking us. I think the ANC government has forgotten the power of political opposition. In principle, the political opposition has a special responsibility in parliament, which is to protect the Constitution. The Nkandla issue was not raised for the EFF, DA or other political opposition parties to exploit but for public interest. But thanks to the opposition parties, President Zuma is being held accountable for using taxpayers’ money. I thank the Public Protector’s office for its endeavours to ensure that truth prevails despite the criticism and insults. Without accountability there is no trust and Zuma owes South Africans an apology. I appeal to citizens of this country to vote responsibly, as this country needs people who are ready to serve the country with honesty.
