She fell in love with motorbikes when she was a kid and now Miad Nyandeni is one of the few in the growing band of ladybikers who get the thrills from grabbing the handlebars of a cycle.

Miad is the only female member of Kasi Riders Motorcycle Club and she feels her presence amongst men will “demystify perceptions about the roughness associated with motorcycling”.

“This is fun and I want to encourage other women to do it,” she enthused to this humble scribe of the Mkonto clan that she bought her first bike in 2012.

Since then she has ridden a lot; early this year, whilst living in Jozi, she became part of the Worldwide Women’s Motorcycle Ride Day, dubbed ‘JUST RIDE’.

This is a synchronized ride happening in all parts of the planet, annually on the first Saturday of May.

“I was riding with Angels on Bike, a group of ladybikers from the US and it was exciting because we ended up raising funds for a home in Katlehong,” she said.

On Saturday the public will be able to see and hear bikers from across the Peninsula revving their engines as they witness Kasi Riders Motorcycle Club launch at the Falsebay College.

Spokesman Mzingisi Baartman said this was the first township based rider club.

“We have a come a long way since we established this club in 2012, our numbers are growing steadily and we are representing Khayelitsha very well in rallies and rides that take place throughout the country,” he said.

Baartman said the launch of their club will be an historic event for the biking fraternity in the Western Cape.

“We expect bikers from all over South Africa to attend this event. We urge the communities of Visionland to attend and see all types of bikers on display,” he added.

“We want to change the perception that bikes are dangerous and that bikes are not for Blacks,” he said.

The launch will start at 11am and entry si R50. “There will be lots of prizes to be won, lots of games and lots of fun. Come with your family to and see what bikers do.
