Following an article on alleged robberies at a local ATM, extra security measures have been put in place to ensure users’ saftey. “Be vigilant at ATMs” detailed how syndicates allegedly cloned unsuspecting ATM users and robbed them of their hard earned cash (City Vision, 15 March). Now, Nedbank in Nomzamo Business Center has decided to secure its ATMs. City Vision was alerted to the syndicate by concerned bankers and the business centre management confirmed to the paper that the cloning of bank cards was happening. This past weekend, changes were brought to the facility. Nedbank is building a booth that will allow only one person to get in and it’s not transparent for people outside. This prevents people from the outside to see when one is busy at the ATM. Although the ATMs were not working owing to the beefing up of security, bank clients are happy. “This will surely make us really safe now,” said ATM user Lebohang Poloko (28). “No-one likes losing the money they worked so hard for, so hopefully they will also increase police visibility, especially during morning hours and late evening.” Anele Ntshobane (25), another user, said cameras must be placed inside the booth as well. “They must not take any chances and put cameras inside the booths,” he said. “My mother was almost robbed, and she does not want to come here to withdraw money anymore. She always sends me.”This security improvement will definitely decrease the chances of these criminals from operating easily in the area. Getting a comment from Nedbank Nomzamo proved impossible, as no-one had been authorised to speak to the media.
