Saluting Bubele Beja

2017-07-20 06:00

I do not know where and how to start to pay my respects to a service well rendered.

Let me start in a language you will understand best. As the Xhosa speaking people of the Eastern Cape say “Uyindoda yamadoda. Kwi-Khayelitsha ubulithemba linzulu namhla litshona emini ilanga. Unyamezele ukugxekwa nokugxijwa namhla ubungenzanga nyala. Ubungabali zilimela ungajonge na majengxeba. Sikuwisa ke isizwe saseKhayelitsha kuwe ngemini yokunzabela sithi uyindoda siqokele sithi uyindoda”.

Indeed every giant that walks across the face of the earth leave signatures on the ground, you have left yours and all eyes can see them, I too bear testimony to that. You have not only made your mark, but Khayelitsha’s. When we needed guidance you were there to guide us, in times of need you were there to lend a helping hand. To me you are not a veteran but a legend. Veterans like flowers fall and like grass wither, but tales of legends lives on to inspire, motivate and encourage future generations, to follow signatures on the ground. Khayelitsha’s offspring for centuries to come will proclaim your name and Khayelitsha will reverberate it. You dedication and commitment to the development of Khayelitsha and its people is beyond reasonable doubt and it cannot be measured. You are the greatest amongst the great.

The 9th Conference of the Khayelitsha Development Forum has spoken in one voice saying to you “Go home and rest now, attend to your businesses” and indeed and truly and honest without any hesitation you agreed to pass the baton on.

Like a concern parent you looked at the newly elected leadership seated in front of you and shed tears knowing deep down in your heart what great amount of work rests in front of them. Every tear that streamed down your wrinkled face was of love for Khayelitsha. As William Shakespeare puts it “Parting is such a sweet sorrow.” Indeed to part with you is as such.

What great honour can we as Khayelitsha give to this legend who has given all to us? You have dedicated your resources and spent every last penny in your pocket, a penny you could have used to buy a half of bread but decided otherwise, because Khayelitsha is and was far more important to you than that half of bread. You have spent long in meetings trying your level best to resolve, mediate and unify this diverse community. Rest assured we will come and knock on your soon, do not get tired when we do so, open your arms to receive us, we will never abandon you.

Ye all! Stand with me and take your hats off in salutation. Salute the Legend “Mr. Bubele Beja”.

One of the longest serving member of the Khayelitsha Development Forum. Yitshoni nonke nithi “YIMA KE MTHI UTHI GOMOLOLO!!!”
