Police minister Bheki Cele opened a new police station in Samora Machel on Tuesday.

He also handed over to station commander Lieutenant Colonel Elliot Lingani about 24 police vans to be used by the 80 members who will be stationed there.

The new station is not a permanent structure yet, but as there still plans of building a permanent police station.

Cele said if he had his way, he would have a police station for every street in the country.

He said the community of Samora has been complaining that they do not have a police station and had to travel far to get attended to by police.

Cele said the opening of the station in the Nyanga cluster will help shed the load from the Nyanga police station.

“This police station will help ease the load Nyanga has been having, because it has always been overloaded,” he said.

He said life is going to be better for the community and they will now feel safe and that the station will assist in dispelling the stigma of being the murder capital on Nyang.

Buyisile Makasi of the Nyanga Community Police Forum(CPF), said the new station will help Nyanga in a very big way.

“It will help Nyanga reduce the workload they have been having, it will also greatly benefit the community,” said Makasi.

He said before community members of Samora had to pay taxis to report a crime in Nyanga, which was not a good thing but now they will access police services for free.

Nombuso Makeleni, a resident, said she was very happy that they finally have a police station of their own in the area.

“I’m happy the station is finally being opened because before we had to go to Nyanga for everything,” she said.

She said she hopes that this helps in the fight against crime in the community.
