Security was tight when scores of mourners gathered at Naluxolo Primary School, in Samora Machel, for the memorial service of the late Raymond Khabiqheya and Sivuyile Gqoboza.

The pair was gunned down at Tsoga Recreational Centre on Monday 3 June (“Zivakalisa inkxalabo iinkokheli zokuhlala eSamora” City Vision June 6.)

The assailants allegedly fled the scene in a mini bus taxi.

Speaking of behalf of the grieving families Vuyiseka Nzuzo said everyone is devastated by the killing.

“Initially, it was sad and painful but because of the support that we are receiving from friends and community members at large we are getting better. The condolence messages and the good things that people are saying about them make us strong,” she said.

Nzuzo stated the families are busy with funeral arrangements in the Eastern Cape in Cofimvaba. She described the deceased as “loveable”. “The attendance says it all because if people didn’t love them the hall would not be full like this. It shows the community lost their heroes,” she said.

Roro Menze, a friend for the deceased, described the two men as “kings of entertainment”. He said wherever they were there was always peace and happiness.

Menze, who was with the pair when they were killed, said they were waiting for some people to bring their soccer kit when the attackers pounced. “We were going to play at NY49 Stadium in Gugulethu that evening. I was busy talking on the phone when I heard gun shots. I ran and took cover,” said Menze adding that he was not sure which direction the perpetrators were coming from.

Menze believes that the perpetrators knew what they wanted. “It seems they (perpetrators) know who they were looking for because they shot them only. And the shooting only took less than three minutes,” he said
