The Siyavuselela Schools Premier League (SSPL) which featured soccer and netball ended with Lwazi and Luzuko Primary Schools being crowned the champions on Friday in Gugulethu.

The closing of SSPL 2017 which was organised by Siyavuselela Sports and Life Skills saw Lwazi Primary School being crowned soccer champions after collecting 26 points in 11 games played.

Luzuko Primary School gained 30 points in 11 matches they played during the first season of the league. The day also saw a select team consisting of players from all 12 schools playing and losing 4-2 against Ajax Cape Town FC juniors.

Vusumzi Mcinga, coach and teacher at Lwazi said the season was good for his team as they won nine matches and drew two matches.

“The success means a lot for us. We competed against tough school in the league. We worked hard and trained all week days. I used the same squad throughout the season without changing it because I wanted to build it.

I would like to thank the school management, more especially our principal MK Mdini for the support,” Mcinga said.

He also said they will continue putting-up a good fight next season.

Anele Magqwaka, of Siyavuselela Sports and Life Skills, said the league went smooth.

“It showed us that it can get bigger than this.

It was successful at its first year. We got a good support from the schools. We still have a challenge of getting transport for learners and also catering for them.

“The schools are also going all out to ensure that everything go successful. This is the only successful league in the Cape Flats schools,” Magqwaka said.

Siyavuselela Sports and Life Skills started with organising friendly games between the schools three years ago before they formed the league.

Sanlam, which is their sponsor, confirmed that they will continue supporting the league next season.
