Principals from different schools around Cape Town were empowered to further their governing skills at their schools.

The principals are part of the Principals Academy Trust. The trust aims to empower school leadership in public schools and to serve socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

The principals studied a year course at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business (GSB).

Last week, the qualifying principals were given certificates of participation in the Principals Management Development Programme.

Among the principals were Thabo Mokhanya of Hopolang Combined School in Gugulethu, Sam Sehloho of Ntwasahlobo Primary School in Khayelitsha, Bongani Dlwathi of Sonwabo Primary School in Gugulethu, Nomsa Mzola deputy principal at Nyameko Primary School and Ntsikelelo Ngcenge acting principal of Intshukumo Secondary School in Gugulethu.

Dlwathi said he learned a lot from the programme and his school is already benefiting from it.

“We were taught how to develop and improve our schools and I’m implementing it,” he said.

He said they were taught personal building skills and how to deal with pressure that comes with managing a school.

Elanca Shelley the course convener at the GSB said the change in how they present the programme has allowed them a lot more flexibility in terms of programme design and how they customise delivery.

She said they have dropped content that doesn’t add value to the principals.

“Personal mastery plays a huge role in the programme she said.
