Schools officially remain open

The provincial education department says MEC Debbie Schäfer did not issue an instruction to Nomzamo schools’ management to dismiss learners during protest action.

Departmental spokesperson Jessica Shelver said a decision of that nature is usually taken by the district director once the situation is assessed, but no decision was taken to send learners home from the Nomzamo schools.

“Learner attendance was, however, affected during this time. The schools remained open and continued to operate as normally as possible,” she said.

The department is monitoring the situation and will act in terms of the safety of all concerned, added Shelver.

“Matric learners at Nomzamo High School are currently writing mock examinations in preparation for the upcoming National Senior Certificate examinations,” she said.

“While we condemn any disruption to schooling at any time during the school year, the disruption of schooling at this critical time of the year is even more concerning, as a number of assessments and exams are currently being written.”
