A 31-year-old suspect appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday 20 May on a charge of murder.

Nyanga police spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi said the suspect had allegedly stabbed and fatally wounded a 30-year-old man on Saturday night in Browns Farm, Philippi.

It is alleged the suspect and the deceased were watching soccer with their neighbours in the suspect’s shack when an argument started.

Sitshitshi said the suspect chased out the deceased and stabbed him in the chest. He also suffered head injuries which is believed to have caused his death.

In a separate incident, Sitshitshi said two suspects aged between 22 and 26 were arrested by the Western Cape Flying Squad in Crossroads on Monday 20 May.

She said police noticed a White Kia Serato parked without the back registration number plate. She said the officers discovered the vehicle’s front number plate belongs to a vehicle that was hijacked in Delft.

Sitshitshi said while police were waiting for a tow truck to impound the vehicle four suspects appeared from shacks and walked towards the vehicle. She said they tried to escape. Two of the suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested and detained for the possession of a hijacked vehicle, while the other two managed to flee.

Sitshitshi said the suspects were expected to appear in Athlone Magistrate’s Court this week for the possession of a hijacked vehicle. Sitshitshi said a total of 145 suspects were arrested in one week by police from Nyanga in various operations.

She said 89 were arrested over the weekend while 38 were arrested for the possession of drugs.

She said 15 were arrested for the possession of dangerous weapons, 16 for drunken driving and four for house robberies and hijacking.
