Police divers are returning to Monwabisi beach to try and recover the body of a Khayelitsha man who drowned on Tuesday (14 February).

According to a report by the NSRI, at about 13:00 yesterday they received eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress at the beach.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, says off-duty lifeguards, NSRI Strandfontein rescue swimmers, the Law Enforcement marine unit, police, the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services dive unit and various paramedics responded to search for the man.

“On arrival on the scene a search commenced for an unidentified male, aged 20, from Khayelitsha, who had gone missing in the surf after appearing to be swept out to sea by rip currents after falling in the water while wading in shallow surf.”

He says despite an extensive land, air and sea search the man could not be found.

Harare police spokesperson Captain Siyabulela Vukubi says at this stage the identity of the man is not known and his body has not yet been recovered.

“The police divers are returning to the beach to search for the body.”
