Langa’s Thembani Primary has left other schools green with envy after placing selected second place in the Western Cape Education Department’s gardening competition.

Mitchell’s Plain Hyde Park Primary School took the full honours.

The competition is run by the National School Nutrition Programme(NSNP) and three of the best producing gardens receive top honours.

Last Friday, Thembani Primary officially received the fruits of their hard work with a cheque of R15 000 for their podium finish in the competition.

Makholwa Xotyeni, the NSNP food garden coordinator, said the competition was not just about how beautiful the garden was, but what impact it played within the school.

“It must also be well managed with the pupils in the driving seat, making it a good garden. There are beautiful gardens in other schools, but they didn’t win because you find that there was not proper administration and the children were not as involved. The garden is important in that the produce also supplement the nutrition programme,” he said.

“We hope that you will continue and use the prize money to make it better and hopefully continue winning,” he concluded.

Acting school principal, Joyce Ngezana, said that they were grateful and that it was part of their efforts to have a good impact on not just gardening but the environment as well.

“The children were very instrumental but it was Mrs Tokwe and the other staff members who really deserve recognition for their part as well.

The children were very involved even through their environment committee, which we have here at school,” she said.

She said that they were hoping to do better in the next competition. Nothemba Tokwe who was pivotal with her work in the garden, shared the glory with the pupils and other staff members.

“The garden is very important as we use the food we produce to help with the feeding programme. I am grateful to the work that was done by the school caretakers as well,” she said.
