Security bus hijacked, burnt

Lwandle police are searching for culprits who set alight a Toyota Quantum belonging to Vetus Schola in Nomzamo on Friday morning (31 May).

Following this incident charges of carjacking, attempted murder and arson have been laid. “The vehicle was stopped by the culprits in Hlathi Drive when the driver went to pick up workers,” said Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, Lwandle police spokesperson.

Apparently, a shot was fired after one of the men gained entry to the vehicle and ordered the driver to get out. “The driver abandoned the vehicle after being instructed to get out by the suspect,” Gama related.

“A shot was fired at the driver, but fortunately he was not injured.”

The driver escaped unharmed and was assisted by his colleagues, Gama added. It is not clear what led to the torching of the vehicle.

Vetus Schola, the security company and owner of the minibus, declined to comment on the matter saying it was a “safety matter and we don’t wish to comment on it”.

Police request that anyone who witnessed the incident contact Lwandle police detective Constable Mfundo Soyiyo on 021 845 2060.

They have offered a reward to anyone with positive information.
