The Taverners Football Association (TFA) has received a much needed boost from energy drink company Seven Stars.

TFA chairman Lungile Ntwanambi said he was thrilled with Seven Stars involvement in their tournament.

“We will be launching a tournament that will run for the next six months and close off with a scintillating final,” said Ntwanambi.

TFA organiser Banana Sodinga said this kind of sponsorship from the company was a “fitting tribute”.

“We have been staging tournaments since 2004 and to have a sponsor like this tells us we are on the right track,” Sodinga said.

He said their relationship with tavern owners was very sound because they understood the value of sports in society.

“All the participating teams field patrons from certain shebeens and taverns. We are not strict on age but we want fairness-we discourage teams from fielding players who are active in normal leagues because this is a Sunday League. This is mainly for guys who want to keep fit by playing soccer and enjoying the camaraderie,” he said.

Sodinga would not divulge the value of the sponsorship but said it was “handsome” and would make every player proud.

There are currently 10 registered taverns for this season and organisers are still looking for two teams to make a complete set.

Danster FC from Khayelitsha will have a hard task defending the championship they won last year.

Ntwanambi said last year’s competition was tough and he hoped that the sponsorship injection will “liven up things in 2016”.

“We hope that all teams will come in the spirit of fair play and show us great football and give the sponsor it’s money’s worth,” he said.

The Seven Stars TFA Challenge will officially kick off on Sunday February 7 at NY 49 Stadium in Gugulethu from 11am.

This will be preceded by a general meeting on Tuesday February 2 at Gugulethu Sport Complex at 6pm. For more details contact Banana on 0787592306 or Lungile on 0786687432.
