LETTER: Shenanigans in GDF by people lacking vision

2016-05-19 06:00

Gugulethu will be turning 60 in August 2018, but it has little progress to show for this milestone, albeit stories abound.

On April 30 residents converged at the JL Zwane church with the purpose of electing a legitimate committee for the Gugulethu Development Forum.

It was going to be a monumental moment in the annals of the history of this township; a fresh start; giving hope to a township suffering for many social ills.

It was going to be the start to a clear future.

Instead of electing people who will bring growth in terms of development, and people we all know have vested interests in the practical in development, the meeting turned into a tug of war, taking a weird turn of events into people identifying each other as comrades.

Others called each other by name, indicating that they were not part of the lobbying for positions.

There must be a difference between a politician and civil society member and this got me thinking if are we really putting Gugulethu first. The GDF cannot be politically aligned.

Why put our political relationships before the residents of Gugulethu as if Gugulethu cannot develop without them(politicians).

Why align development with politics and why degenerate the level of thinking in Gugulethu.

Maybe it is time we start following our name because Gugulethu means our pride.

Have we lost our pride because we choose friendship over development and the saddening part is those among us who are so eager for power have previously had opportunities and failed dismally in their previous positions of responsibility.

I’m speaking of the previous executive members of Gugulethu Youth Development Commission and the former chairperson of the same structure.

Why undermine our history, allowing it to loosely be handled by people who claim to be leaders but lack vision.

Let’s think of our future generation because history will judge Gugulethu by those they put in power and Gugulethu belongs to those who have a postal code of 7750 which includes Barcelona, Kanana, New Rest, Tambo Village and Kwa-Khikhi, Pola Park, Gxagxa and Lotus River as well as many other few areas are part of Gugulethu.

The aim of the GDF is to improve and enhance development in the township, and promote economic participation as well as to improve economic inclusion and to enable Gugulethu citizens to fulfil their potential by promoting self-oriented initiatives.

Therefore it should be led by the people of Gugulethu, we cannot allow this initiative to be led by poor political hungry idealists.

It’s surprising to hear that the same individuals, who are being blamed for side-lining areas like Barcelona, Kanana, and New Rest, include people like Nombeko Leputing, a leader in Ward 40.

In 2011-2012 Xolile Ndzoyi and Nceba Sandlana were very instrumental in ending a war of gangsterism between Khikhi and Section 2 boys.

Nceba, Xolile and other dedicated individuals were on the ground trying to resolve and find ways of fixing the problems.

It becomes very confusing when people work on second-hand information; individuals with specific agendas driven by factionalism with the aim of misguiding the people of Gugulethu with a view to discredit individuals who are doing good in this township.

Gugulethu Development Forum’s aim is developing and allowing Gugulethu to grow on its own.

We need to create social cohesion programs for better economic opportunities, and establish a proactive program that will create synergy in the society such as encouraging entrepreneurial skills, sports activities for the youth, tourism programs and most importantly, making Gugulethu safe to live.
