While many are looking forward to the festive season celebration, one Mfuleni education collective is already looking beyond.

The Mfuleni Education Forum is inviting residents; churches, communities and other organisations donate pairs of schools shoes.

The forum was born out of the local Wesleyn Church as part of the organisation looking at various community needs.

This is part of their back-to-school campaign.

According to the Thembekile Gqwaka, MEF chair, the campaign aims to fight poverty and its dire effects on society.

“A shoe may seem like an insignificant object but it’s one of the first things that discourage a child from going to school.

There are many children in the grip of poverty in our community and affording them a pair of shoes can be the push they need,” said Gqwaka.

He said that this was just the start of a one of a handful of campaigns they aim to push for next year.

“When this forum was formed, we identified various problems in the education landscape in Mfuleni.

The fact there isn’t one skill of school is very discouraging and the fact there schools in the area were divided between two districts in the education departments was a headache but it has been solved,” he said.

Gqwaka said that they were urging local residents and organisations to heed their call and donate a pair of shoes.

“It’s a small thing but it will ready do wonders for the moral of the child.

We will be accepting donations at the Milton Martin church on monday afternoon,” he said.

The forum has been very instrumental in also approaching corporate companies to donate uniforms at the local schools and they aim to much more.

To donate a pair of shoes or for more information contact Mr Gqwaka on 0839555061.
